Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The ADA is a law that was enacted by the US Congress in 1990. The ADA is a comprehensive civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity." The determination of whether any particular condition is considered a disability is made on a case-by-case basis. Certain specific conditions are excluded as disabilities, such as current substance abuse and visual impairment that is correctable by prescription lenses.
Each of our colleges has designated a ADA/504 compliance officer to help students with issues related to disabilities and/or accommodations.
Service Animals
Any student with a disability who needs a service animal to participate in and benefit from our services, programs, and activities may use a service animal on district and college property.
Office of Civil Rights (OCR)
OCR serves student populations facing discrimination as well as the advocates and institutions promoting systemic solutions to civil rights problems. An important responsibility of OCR is resolving complaints of discrimination. OCR-initiated cases are typically called compliance reviews.
OCR and the Los Rios Community College District work cooperatively together to address and resolve complaints and ensure voluntary compliance with civil rights laws enforced through OCR. For more information, contact your college's equity officer.
