FAQs
Our students have skills and experience beyond their program of study. From "skills builders" focused on earning short-term certificates, to "nontraditional" students returning to make a career pivot, to recent high school graduates pursuing career exploration, Los Rios students can contribute by applying lessons from life and the classroom. Employers can view student profiles in Handshake or partner with an internship developer to make the right match between the student and organization.
The Work Experience and Internship Program is an academic program offered at all four of our student-centered colleges focused on experiential learning. It allows students to apply what they've learned in the classroom to a work environment while earning college credit.
Work Experience helps students develop technical skills and non-technical skills in their field of study.
An unpaid internship is similar to training that would be given in an educational environment. For this reason, unpaid internships are subject to increased examination to ensure compliance with the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act, which mandates that the internship should offer students a learning experience closely aligned with their major or career goals.
Ultimately, an unpaid internship must benefit the student more than the employer and for that reason it is best if you craft your posting around projects and skill building work. The internship description should avoid lengthy qualifications lists and duty lists that mimic that of a regular employee.
Unpaid internship descriptions should include all of the following elements:
- Projects that involve skill development and collaboration with professional staff
- Projects that require critical thinking and reflection on learning
- Time to establish goals and assess progress towards goals
- Supervision and mentorship by a professional with expertise in the field
