Handshake Support for Employers

Best Practices for Employers

  • Build a complete company profile with interesting facts that make your workplace stand out and attract candidates.
  • Make your job posting as dynamic as the job: your job description is the main hook for students. Include specific skills, responsibilities, minimum and preferred qualifications, and personal or professional growth opportunities in your description to attract more applicants.
  • When posting a job that allows remote workers, include verbiage indicating this in your job description as well. Students can search for positions using keyword search.
  • While Handshake allows any student to apply for any job, students can see when they don't meet your preferred major qualifications, and that may deter some otherwise competitive candidates from applying. Expanding those qualifications may provide you with a greater pool of candidates and improve your overall recruiting experience with Handshake.
  • Avoid using "school year" and "graduation year" preferences/filters to increase your pool of candidates.

Posting Policies

Requests to join Handshake are carefully reviewed to ensure a safe, equitable, and legally compliant recruiting environment for Los Rios students. To uphold the quality and integrity of employment opportunities, Los Rios does not approve job postings that include any of the following:

  • Upfront costs for training, equipment, or materials
  • Required unpaid training for a paid position
  • Postings from third-party recruiters or staffing agencies that do not disclose the hiring organization
  • Postings that promote multiple positions in a single announcement
  • Postings that advertise a hiring event rather than a specific job*
  • In-person positions located outside of California that offer low wages and limited career growth
  • Positions requiring students to work in a private household
  • Positions requiring a doctoral degree

In addition, access to Handshake will be denied to organizations in the following categories:

  • Adult entertainment
  • Multi-level marketing (MLM)
  • Third-party recruiters or staffing agencies
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis organizations

Additionally, employers that do not comply with local, state, federal, or other applicable legal guidelines may be denied access.

If any of the conditions listed above are included in a position description, the posting will be denied. Employers will be provided with a clear rationale for the denial and given the opportunity to revise and resubmit the posting to align with Los Rios posting standards.

Los Rios adheres to these policies to ensure a safe, ethical, and supportive employment environment for our students.

*Employers may post hiring or recruitment events through Handshake. For more information, please contact one of the campus Career Centers.
