Course Numbering System Transition
Los Rios Community College District is updating its course numbering system to align with California’s new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, making it easier for students to transfer credits between community colleges and four-year institutions. This transition will take place in phases, starting in Fall 2025.
Current Course Numbering System
Most courses at Los Rios Community College District follow this numbering system:
- Course Numbers 1 to 99
- Developmental or basic skills courses. These courses are for credit but do not count toward an associate degree or transfer credit.
- Course Numbers 100 to 299
- Courses that apply toward an associate degree but are not transferable to a four-year institution.
- Course Numbers 300 to 499
- Courses articulated for transfer to four-year institutions, meeting major, general education, or elective credit requirements.
New Common Course Numbering System
To simplify course transfers, all California community colleges are adopting Common Course Numbering (CCN). This system ensures that similar courses across all California community colleges share the same names and numbers, providing consistency and clarity for students planning to transfer to California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), or other institutions. The CCN system uses the following structure:
- Subject Code: Four-letter abbreviation (for example, ENGL for English).
- Course Type Identifier: CCN courses begin with "C" but local courses do not (for example, C1000 vs. 300).
- Course Number: Standardized 4-digit number (for example, C1000 vs. 300).
As an example, ENGWR 300 becomes ENGL C1000 after the CCN transition.
What This Means for Students
- During Summer 2025, you will continue using the current numbering system.
- Starting in Fall 2025, some courses will transition to the new CCN system. See a full list of CCN courses at your college.
- The transition will happen in phases, so you'll see both types of courses in the class schedule.
Implementation Timeline
- Fall 2025: Initial phase of Common Course Numbering begins.
- Ongoing: Additional courses will transition in phases.
- Full Adoption: Expected completion timeline will be announced as updates become available.
We encourage students to check course listings carefully and consult with academic counselors to ensure a smooth transition.
Transfer Credit
Courses accepted for transfer by the University of California (UC) and/or California State University (CSU) systems are identified as such in the course details next to "Transferable." Students who have questions regarding transferability of credit for specific courses to specific institutions should consult a counselor.
Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID)
The C-ID system is a statewide numbering system designed to identify comparable courses and facilitate articulation. Any community college course that bears a C-ID number signifies that it is equivalent in content, rigor, and student learning outcomes. Any course with a C-ID number can be assured that it will be accepted at other participating community college or CSU campuses. For example: C-ID COMM 110 at Los Rios Community College District will be accepted by any other college that has been approved for the same C-ID COMM 110 number.
Students should consult a counselor for specific information and help evaluating course transferability. In addition, students should visit ASSIST.org to confirm how each college's course will be accepted for the following:
- Majors at CSU and UC campuses
- CSU general education requirements
- IGETC general education requirements
Please consult a counselor to find out if your courses meet requirements at private and out-of-state colleges and universities. See an up-to-date listing of Los Rios Community College District C-ID approved courses on the Transfer and Articulation System website for California's colleges and universities.
