FAQs
You deserve to feel safe and supported. Remember that this is your therapy session, meant to help you! Take a deep breath, relax, and know you're in a safe place with a trained and trustworthy therapist.
During your first session, your therapist may ask you a lot of questions. Their goal is to learn more about you so they can assess your concerns and current well-being, and determine how to best help you.
Tips:
- It can be useful to write down a few notes about why you're seeking help.
- Think about what you are hoping to resolve or feel better about.
- Don't like your therapist? No worries, try another one.
- Not feeling it? No problem (don't feel bad, it happens).
Yes – Los Rios offers you the flexibility to change your therapist preferences at any time.
You also have access to a diverse group of online therapists through BetterMynd.
You can call your college's Student Health and Wellness Center for assistance. Unfortunately, availability varies, but we will do our best to meet your needs.
For immediate help for non-crisis support, call BetterMynd's 24/7 Emotional Support Line at 1-844-BTR-MYND (1-844-287-6963).
If you are experiencing a crisis, please use the resources listed under Emergency Resources.
Students receive six mental health therapy sessions per academic year. If you are not able to keep an appointment you scheduled, call the SHWC or go to the patient portal to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Canceling or rescheduling your appointment frees up this time and allows another student to schedule an appointment.
If you do not attend your scheduled appointment (and you haven't canceled or rescheduled), this will be considered a “No-Show” appointment. We understand that sometimes life happens, so you are allowed one “No-Show” appointment without it counting toward your six-session limit.
To ensure students have access to our in-person mental health therapist, further “No-Show” appointments will count against your session limit. Once the session limit is met, you may be denied future appointments for the academic year; however, we will help you find support that fits your needs and schedule.
No, you do not need to be a full-time student to access mental health services, but you must be currently enrolled in at least one class at a Los Rios college.
Receiving a mental health diagnosis requires multiple sessions with a therapist. We have partnered with BetterMynd, a teletherapy provider, to offer these free services to our students. Contact BetterMynd support services at support@bettermynd.com to find a clinician who offers diagnostic services.
Los Rios therapists do not provide mental health diagnoses.
You can receive in-person mental health therapy or advocacy at any Los Rios Student Health and Wellness Center. Los Rios therapists also offer virtual therapy appointments by request.
