Canvas Outage – Faculty FAQ

Find answers to common questions related to the May 2026 Canvas outage and its impact on faculty and students. If you have any immediate questions that are not addressed in the FAQ, contact your dean.

Do we know if any Los Rios information (student data, intellectual property, or anything else) has been compromised?

Instructure (Canvas parent company) has indicated they will be reaching out to each college impacted, with specific information about what was accessed. The State Chancellor’s Office will coordinate with Instructure on this, though it will take some time as they are still working with partners and law enforcement on the investigation.

Is my Canvas page still accurate and up to date? Was anything altered or deleted?

We have been assured by the State Chancellor’s Office that Instructure scanned for file changes and modifications to site content that faces students and faculty; there were no changes to user data for spring or summer classes (such as grades, assignment information, or course shells) or content in Canvas.

Will the deadline to submit grades be extended for faculty?

We are not extending the deadline, but we are extending grace and not penalizing faculty for submitting grades after the May 28 deadline. Obviously, the impact on students is significant if grades are late, because student transcripts need to reflect prerequisites before students enroll in summer classes and/or transfer. If you have questions or concerns, please work with your dean on how to address them.

How do I report suspicious messages or account behavior in Canvas?

Report any suspicious communication to Los Rios IT via Service Central and do not engage with it.

As always, stay vigilant against suspicious emails or computer activity.

Should faculty download their grades from the Canvas gradebook as a precaution?

Though Canvas is back online, as a precaution, faculty may want to export any class or grade information from the Canvas gradebook as a local backup. Here's a help article on how to export grades. If you have questions about how to export information, contact your college distance education coordinator.

Will other apps within Canvas still work?

Though Canvas has been restored, some third-party applications within Canvas may experience intermittent outages as systems come back online.

Do we have any assurances that this won’t happen again?

This outage has impacted millions of Canvas users around the world, and the State Chancellor's Office continues to work with the vendor on the ongoing investigation to determine what happened and how it can be avoided in the future. We will continue to monitor this situation in coordination with the State Chancellor's Office.
